When first coming down in your pod, aim for a shoreline. It's the safest area, has the most food, and is warmest at night. If you see an area where shore is near mountains, try for that area because while you can find Iron, copper, and silicon on the shores and just inland, higher open areas seem to have a LOT more. Grab your water from your pod and anything else that gets added (currently stock just gives a water which I have yet to use before building a base). Then start following the shore. Grab any plants you can. What you don't use turns to spoiled food which you'll use latter. Also, you get 100xp for each harvest. Look for small blue flower stocks inland just a few meters. You can make hot drink from that which helps when you start getting cold warnings. You'll want to make a few drinks. They don't spoil so you can stock up. Also, make some energy drinks because your starter tool you make in your suit uses stam which you also need for running. Run out of stam, and you can mine rocks, fire the tool in defence mode, or run away. Put the energy drinks on the hot bar. The food you get from the large white bulbs gives you 40 food and some health. 2 of those make 1 bar which gives 80 food and takes longer to spoil, but gives no health. Grabbing plant fibers is also good because you only start with 1 bandaid and you should make a few more for broken bones, open, wounds, etc.. Plus you will use plant fibers to make ammo for the pistol when you get the portable constructor. Try to keep some honey on hand, it gives 90 health. But also make some extra white pills in case you get sick from eating raw food. During the day, try to head up some mountain areas that are close to the water. You get a lot more ore there. Head back down at night to stay warm. When you level, unlock the portable constructor and build it along with the heater if you are having problems staying warm. Also you want a pistol and a couple hundred rounds of ammo, and the 2 scanner tools. The detector which looks like a barcode reader seems to be for finding POI's, most of which you will want to stay well clear of for now. Not sure about the ore scanner. If it now finds the deposites or what. Ore is back to one big lump now instead of the little rocks they had for awhile when they added the ore scanner which showed you where they were. Build up ore, use the portable constructor to make bars and planks for your BP's. ALso, want to convert some grain to plastic which you will need for the better drill ammo once you find promethium. The spoiled food goes to fuel for the basic drill and can be used to power bases, and craft. But you use a lot. I recommend unlocking the solar parts quickly for your base. if you don't go too wild and turn of constructors when not in use, 3-5 large panels can provide all the power you need to run a couple turrets, a door, a fridge, and part time use of contructors. Note, solar panels seem to work under water though output may be reduced.
